History

Ironstone gravels and schist over dark red clays at 314m above sea level. Densely packed, tightly wound and nervy, this is an archetypal ‘vin de garde’. Liquefied earth, spiced minerals and sun-drenched ironstone are precociously bound with taut flavours of crème de mure, smoked cedar and roasted herbs. More akin to a focused young wine of Graves than its namesake’s home in the Northern Rhone, Andelmonde’s tightfisted youth will require many years of serenity before realising its pinnacle.

“I was blown away by this wine. I’ve tasted lots and lots of Barossa reds, this is perhaps the best. The density and intensity of colour made me suspect it was going to be one of those big, spoofy styles, but it wasn’t at all. There’s not a hint of over-ripeness here, and it weighs in at 13.5% alcohol, even though it is a concentrated beast. Intensely coloured, the palate is hugely concentrated with dense, dark, ripe fruit beautifully framed by the fresh acidity and spicy, earthy savouriness. It’s beautifully judged with firm structure underpinning the sweet fruit, and the oak playing a supporting role. This is a powerful but balanced wine. One of the best examples of Barossa Shiraz I’ve ever tried.” Jamie Goode – Wine Anorak
